Find A Trail

Mare
Galaxy-class nerd, manic hiker and “mom” to a pack of adopted dogs, Mare Czinar has been exploring Arizona trails for more than 20 years. After being lead astray (or just confused) by outdated hiking books and online resources (hence the tag line: we got lost, so you don’t have to), Mare sought to create a fully vetted, frequently updated online hike travelogue with current driving and hiking directions to spare fellow hikers the mental and physical wear-and-tear of aimless wandering. She is the author of PHOENIX magazine The Hike Book volumes 1,2 3 and 4 available at Arizona REI stores, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Barnes & Noble, AZ Hiking Shack, Just Roughin' It Adventure Co., and Wide Wold of Maps. Also available online at: https://cities-west-publishing.square.site/product/HikeBook/295?cs=true&cst=custom. When not working, blogging, writing about the great outdoors or picking up dog poo, Mare attempts to “stay found” while checking out new trails. Wildlife Watching in Dead Horse Ranch State Park

DEAD HORSE RANCH STATE PARK LAGOONS

Mingus Mountain reflects in a lagoon at DHRSP

Wildlife watching in Dead Horse Ranch State Paris a hit-or-miss prospect.

Great blue herons are easy to spot at DHRSP

It’s a definite maybe for a river otter sighting, odds are good to spot a Great blue heron and certainly a red-winged blackbird, and observant watchers might spy a fast-moving California kingsnake.
Limestone cliffs flank a lagoon at DHRSP

All bets are off though, for catching a gray fox climbing a tree.
Diverse habitats at DHRSP attract wildlife

Still, a walk through the park that melds a semi-arid high desert climate with a humid riverside riparian habitat yields animal encounters both common and rare.
Silverleaf nightshade bloom along the lagoon trails

Situated on the north banks of a tree-lined bend of the Verde River, Dead Horse Ranch State Park has more than 20 miles of hiking trails.

Keep wildlife wild. Observe from a distance.

Vociferous red-winged blackbirds thrive among reeds

The park trail menu has options for hikers of all ability levels including the ADA-accessible Canopy Trail, easy lagoon loops, and access to more challenging Coconino National Forest routes like 15.8-mile Lime Kiln Trail and Raptor Hill.  With easy access from Old Town Cottonwood, shaded paths in the Verde Valley park offer a quick escape from summer heat.

Under a canopy of cottonwood, walnut, and willow trees, three level, multi-use, accessible trails loop around the park’s lagoons that draw river water by way of the historic Hickey irrigation ditch.

Globemallow add spots of orange to the trails

Open to hikers, bikers and leashed dogs, the wide, groomed tread of the loops is welcoming to strollers and other mobility devises making them family-friendly choices for exploring the water-centric site.
River otters, waterfowl, deer and amphibians live in the park

A walk around the reedy, birdy ponds that capture mirror images of distant Mingus Mountain and a nearby wall of layer cake limestone reveals an oasis-like environment that abuts both a shady river corridor and arid mesquite scrubland.

Benches and picnic tables placed around the lagoons provide comfortable places for observing wildlife in their natural environments.

Lagoon trails are easy and accessible

AZ black walnut trees shade the lagoon trails

For best results, consult the Arizona Game & Fish Department’s Wildlife Viewing Tips. And remember to keep wildlife wild by not feeding or disrupting their habitats.

SILLY MOUNTAIN

SILLY MOUNTAIN PARK
Apache Junction
High Point Trail go to the summit of Silly Mountain

Sandwiched between the US 60 freeway and the rough-cut mountains of the Superstition Wilderness, Silly Mountain Park straddles the worlds of hot pavement and rugged back country. A web of 11 trails meander along the the mountain's humps, slumps and points of interest including an old grave site and an abandoned mine. The park is the result of a restoration project funded by public and corporate donations and managed through a partnership between the City of Apache Junction and the Superstition Area Land Trust--a non-profit educational corporation created to protect and preserve Arizona State Trust Lands around the southern slopes of the Superstition Mountains. Up until 2008, Silly Mountain was being used as an off-road vehicle playground which took a heavy toll in the terrain. The decimation of native vegetation and deep trackway scars were becoming an eyesore and a public safety concern. Restoration of the site involved stabilizing trails for long term sustainability, re-establishing indigenous plants and restricting travel to non-motorized use. The park's most resent addition is a barrier-free, interpretive Botanical Walk that features 280 species of Sonoran Desert plants.
LENGTH: 3.5 miles of trails plus a barrier free Botanical Walk
RATING: easy to difficult
ELEVATION: 1550 - 2139 feet
GETTING THERE:
From Phoenix, travel east on U.S. 60 and turn left onto Mountain View Road just past milepost 199. Go 0.3 miles on Mountain View, turn right onto 32nd Ave and continue 0.2 mile to Silly Mountain Road. Turn right and go 0.4 mile to the trailhead on the left.

HIGHLANDS CENTER FOR NATURAL HISTORY

HIGHLANDS CENTER FOR NATURAL HISTORY
Prescott
Lynx Creek

Located adjacent to the Lynx Lake recreation site a few miles south of downtown Prescott, the trails of the Highland Center for Natural History blend hiking with education. Two easy trail loops are laid out to highlight the unique geology, plant life, conservation concerns and watershed resources of the Central Arizona Highlands. Accompanying field guides available at the trailhead correspond with numbered points of interest along the collective 3-miles of nature trails. These short paths also connect with longer forest trails for those who want more of a challenge. In addition to being a model of sustainable building practices and fire-wise landscaping, the center offers a plethora of guided field hikes, youth learning opportunities and naturalist certification programs. But the keynote event is the annual "Take A Hike" Hiking Spree. Participants in the popular self-paced event hike a list of designated trails within the Prescott National Forest and City of Prescott systems between September and December. Hikers who complete the program may purchase a specially designed commemorative medallion and also are entered into a prize drawing.  The 2014 Spree kicked off on Sept 6th and this year's trail selection includes perennial classics like Juniper Mesa as well as newly opened Granite Gardens trails. BLACK CANYON HERITAGE PARK

BLACK CANYON HERITAGE PARK
Black Canyon City

A sign at the park entry urges visitors to close the gate to “keep the cows out”. Here, in a valley between I17 and the Bradshaw Mountains, there may well be marauding bovines, however, Black Canyon Heritage Park is all about sheep, fish and preservation of a rare stream side ecosystem.
Spawned by a generous donation of land, community activism and the help of numerous grants including one from the National Park Service Rivers Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, this 25-acre park opened in November 2012.  Thus far, 23.5 acres of riparian desert along the Agua Fria River have been restored with constructed streams, lush vegetation and ponds stocked with native fish. Two barrier free loop trails wander among cattail coves, willow-cottonwood forests and a pine-shaded picnic area with interpretive signs detailing the area’s sheep herding heritage. Located just over a mile north of a major trailhead for the Black Canyon National Recreational Trail, this pretty little place makes for an interesting side trip or post hike lunch spot.

A barrier-free tribute trail to this tenacious mover-and-shaker loops through a delightful wash area in the Brown's Ranch parcel of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Wide, flat and adorned with interpretive signs and Palo Verde shaded benches, the trail was dedicated on March 22, 2014 making it the Valley's newest destination for effortless walks with strollers, wheelchairs, antsy kids and hiking enthusiasts of all ages and ability levels.

Happy tails at Usery Mountain Park

MERKLE TRAIL WAG & WALK HIKES
Usery Mountain Regional Park
A hopeful pup and her handler arrive at the trailhead

More than 29 miles of hiking trails bumping up against Mesa's Goldfield Mountains grace this lower Sonoran Desert park.  The miles are divided up among 19 routes ranging from easy to difficult, so there's something for everyone---including those who require or prefer barrier-free trekking. For hikers pushing strollers or turning wheels, the Merkle Trail is just the ticket.  Off limits to bikes and horses, the flat, graded path makes a loop through lush vegetation with outstanding mountain views. On the first Saturday of each month from November through April, the public is invited to hike this trail along with adoptable dogs from Maricopa County Animal Care’s east shelter. “Wag & Walk” hiker dogs are already spayed or neutered and available to go home on the spot with reduced adoption fees and a chance to win free county park passes.  Even if you’re not looking for a new fur baby, hiking among a pack of happy tails makes for a memorable morning in the desert.

Kid-friendly wetlands hike

PINTAIL WETLANDS
Allen Severson Wildlife Area

View from the blind

A haven for Arizona White Mountain bird populations, this 370-acre marsh area was created by the City of Show Low to increase waterfowl production while providing an eco-friendly solution for wastewater effluent.  Two accessible trails with interpretive signs wind among pinyon-juniper grasslands before emerging into a willow-wrapped wetland bird haven.  The main path splits at a fork 0.2 mile from the trailhead.  Here, go left to get to an enclosed viewing blind with seating and bird identification placards.  The right fork leads to a wood plank open-air observation platform.  Patience is required to catch glimpses of the wildlife that frequents the area.  In addition to the expected pintails and mallards, look for raptors, songbirds, antelope and elk. To get the most out of your visit, download a bird identification app and pack a pair of binoculars.

LENGTH: 1.2 miles roundtrip
RATING: easy, barrier-free, 100% paved
ELEVATION: 6400’

Urban exercise hike

ALVORD LAKE
Phoenix

It was one of those Saturdays.  You know, those sacrificial weekend days given to yard work. While out  rushing around to the various plant nurseries in the area, I came across Cesar Chavez Park.  Even though I've known about it for years, I never really considered it a hiking destination.  However, when curiosity got the better of me, I made a quick detour between chores and discovered a very pleasant walking path and an unexpected, welcome leg stretch. The park is packed with ammenities like swing sets for the kids and is also part of the Arizona Game & Fish Urban Fishing Program.  The easy, paved walking path circles the 25-acre lake and has nice views of South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains and  plenty of water fowl.

Barrier-free wildflower trails

JUDITH TUNELL TRAILS
South Mountain Park
Judith Tunell Challenge Trail, March 7, 2013

Recently re-paved and groomed these two trails make getting out into the desert easy for everyone.  Two connected loop routes offer choices for those with mobility concerns or families with little kids.  The Accessible Loop is 100% paved, flat and outfitted with benches, shade ramadas and interpretive signage giving insight to the local flora, fauna and human history.  The Challenge Loop, although also paved, features a slightly steeper grade leading to a scenic rest point overlooking downtown Phoenix.  Both loops are perfect choices for viewing spring wildflowers. Right now, brilliant Mexican Gold Poppies are spilling over the bajadas while vivid purple lupine and scorpionweed vie for attention among saguaros and hedgehog cactuses.  Today’s rain will surely amplify the colorful show, which usually runs wild through April.

A waterfall for all

WATERFALL CANYON
White Tank Mountain Regional Park
Pool at the base of Waterfall Canyon: Feb. 12, 2013

Approaching the slot canyon
How many people can fit into the 12' x 12' box canyon at the end of White Tank Mountain Park's Waterfall Trail?  By my observations, at least 16--while a constant que waits on deck to rotate in.  Perhaps a better question might be; what on earth could possibly be so interesting that 16 people would want cram into such a place?  Welcome to one of Arizona's premier mostly-barrier-free hiking destinations. This extraordinary trail's popularity is bolstered by its wide, flat surface which is advertised as suitable for strollers, wheelchairs and walkers for at least the first 0.6-mile.  However, I've seen wheeled trekkers make it all the way up to the final 300 yards where a set of stone stairs leads to the box canyon---and beyond with a little assistance.  This is a beautiful thing.  Because so many of Arizona's special hiking trails require physical stamina and equipment lists beyond the scope of casual day trippers, it's good to know that Waterfall Canyon offers a glimpse of desert splendor to anyone willing to get out of  their car.  Besides the sometimes-flowing-sometime-not waterfall, galleries of ancient rock art line the entire route. "Petroglyph plaza"--an open-air amphitheater with benches--displays several major design panels with trailside signs explaining their significance.
Just below the waterfall, another considerable heritage site includes an eclectic mix of astronomical, hunting and magical designs tapped into boulders.  Here, the trail meets stone stairs for a short climb to the waterfall box canyon.  Inside, a trio of  stone walls, worn smooth by a million rainy seasons, jut vertically skyward from a  white sand beach and plunge pool echoing a serinade of digital camera clicks and whizzes.

RATING: easy, barrier-free up to the last 300 yards.
ELEVATION:  1500' - 1700'
DOGS: leashed dogs are allowed
FACILITIES: restrooms
FEE: $6 daily fee per vehicle

GETTING THERE:
From Phoenix, go 18 miles west on I10 Loop 303.  Go north and contnue on 303 to Olive.  Turn left (west) on Olive and proceed 4 miles to the park entrance. Once in the park, follow the main road (White Tank Mountain Rd) 2 miles to Waterfall Canyon Road.  Turn left and go 0.4 mile to the signed trailhead on the left.  NOTE: 2013 road construction plans may cause detours.  Visit the  park web site or call ahead for details.

An "upside down" river ramble

HASSAYAMPA RIVER PRESERVE
The Nature Conservancy, Wickenburg
River Ramble Trail

Palm Lake
Tucked between  US60 and  BNSF railroad tracks on the outskirts of Wickenburg, an enchanting forest thrives in a rare riraprian corridor of an "upside down" river. Like many desert waterways, the Hassayampa River--which runs 100 miles from Prescott to the Gila River southwest of Buckeye--flows underground except in only a few places, thus earning its Yavapai moniker "upside down" river. One place in the river's course  where water flows year-round is The Nature Conservancy's Hassayampa River Preserve. More than two miles of hiking trails wind through this 700+- acre property.  The paths range in difficulty from barrier-free (Palm Lake Trail) to mildly challenging (Lykes Lookout) and each showcases a particular aspect of the site's ecological diversity.  The most wild of the trails is River Ramble  which  wanders along the waterway in a tangle of gigantic cottonwoods and Goodding willows with a carcophony of bird songs drifting through the canopy.  Here, it's easy to spot herons and other water fowl lurking among cattails. Along the muddy banks, a frenzy of racoon, opossum, skunk and fox prints betray the critters skulking in the underbrush.  Other preserve trails focus on endangered mesquite bosques and a spring-fed lake replete with water-loving vegetation.  It's no wonder this place is a magnet for birds both common and rare.  In February, Cedar Waxwings and Yellow-rumped Warblers splatter flicks of lemony color through trees and shrubs.  More common aboreal winged creatures like brilliant scarlet  Northern Cardinals and vociferous Curve-billed Thrashers add familiar sounds to the bird convention.  February is a terrific month for viewing either on your own or as part of a guided tour.  Either way, plan on spending several hours exploring this incredible roadside gem.

Barrier-free Mogollon Rim hike

MOGOLLON RIM INTERPRETIVE TRAIL
Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest
Mogollon Rim overlook

paved part of the trail
This trail has been languishing on my to-do list for decades.  Each time I've sped by the trailhead on my way to other White Mountain hikes, I'd give it a well-intended "some day" nod.  As a single trail, it's not long enough to justify a drive from the Valley, so this past week, I added it  to my Country Club Trail-Woodland Lake agenda for a single day, three-fer hike.  Visitors are greeted at the trailhead by an information kiosk featuring a map and lots of "didjaknow" historical facts.  The first half-mile of the trail is paved, barrier-free and winds through a shady Ponderosa pine forest and over the first of four wood bridges spanning an irrigation canal.  Fourteen signed "stops" line the route,  comprising the interpretive part of the trek.  Although some of the plaques are missing, the ones still intact describe the forestry, geology and human history of the area.  The paved portion of the trail ends at a scenic sandstone ledge overlooking the Mogollon Rim.  It's not as magnificent as say the Rim Vista Trail near Payson, but it's still impressive.  Beyond the ledge, the hike is an easy stroll on sandy paths with willows, flowering shrubs and Alligator junipers.   I'd recommend this hike for families with kids,  those with mobility challenges----and also, as an add-on destination for other Pinetop-Lakeside area trails.

LENGTH: 1-mile loop
RATING: easy, partially barrier-free
ELEVATION: 6,800'
GETTING THERE:
From Show Low, head east on AZ 260 (a.k.a. White Mountain Blvd) and  immediately after entering the Pinetop-Lakeside town limits and just past Camp Grace, turn right at the big masonry "Pinetop-Lakeside sign between mileposts 347 and 348. The trailhead is at the end of the parking area near some power lines.
